Cydeways is an alternative reggae band hailing from Santa Barbara, California, known for their unique fusion of reggae, alternative rock, and hip-hop influences. The band is fronted by vocalist and guitarist Dustin Parks, who originally formed the project in Boston, Massachusetts. Seeking new opportunities and a more vibrant music scene, Parks relocated to California, eventually settling in Santa Barbara. There, he assembled the current lineup, including Jeremy Baker on lead guitar, Casey Kernohan on drums, Daniel Kearney on bass, Trevor Buckingham as producer and engineer, and Dana Shoults as co-producer. This diverse group of musicians brought together their varied backgrounds to create a distinctive sound that blends laid-back reggae vibes with the high-energy punch of alternative rock.
In 2018, Cydeways caught the attention of LAW Records, a label known for its roster of prominent reggae and alternative artists. The connection was facilitated through mutual acquaintances, notably Joe D. from Iration, who introduced Parks to Yesod Williams of LAW Records. Impressed by their sound, the label signed Cydeways, marking a significant milestone in the band's career. That same year, they released the single "Shadows," featuring hip-hop artist Grieves, showcasing their ability to seamlessly blend genres and collaborate with artists from different musical backgrounds.
The band's musical journey continued with the release of their debut EP, "After Hours," in 2020. This seven-track collection featured collaborations with notable artists such as Ballyhoo! and Grieves, further solidifying their presence in the reggae-rock scene. The EP was well-received, with tracks like "Come Alive" and "Are You Down" highlighting their versatility and ability to craft infectious melodies. The success of "After Hours" set the stage for their self-titled debut album, released in March 2022.
This full-length record included collaborations with G. Love & Special Sauce, Pepper, and Surfer Girl, and was produced by industry veterans like Kyle Black and Lewis Richards. The album showcased a matured sound, blending alternative rock elements with their reggae roots, and received positive reviews for its genre-bending approach. In 2023, Cydeways released their fourth full-length album, "Wasted Summer," marking a significant evolution in their musical style. The album featured collaborations with artists like Matisyahu and Wax, and was noted for its bolder, heavier sound while maintaining their reggae-soul core.
Tracks like "Lockdown" and "Change" addressed themes of personal struggle and societal issues, reflecting the band's growth and willingness to tackle complex subjects in their music. The album's title track, co-written with Nashville songwriter Nick Bailey, encapsulated the band's ethos and creative process, symbolizing their journey and the culmination of years of work. As of August 2025, Cydeways remains an active and dynamic force in the alternative reggae scene. They have been touring extensively, performing at various venues across the United States, including notable festivals like Reggae Rise Up Oregon. Their live performances are celebrated for delivering laid-back reggae vibes infused with the high-energy punch of alternative rock, creating unforgettable experiences for their audiences.
