Maoli, a prominent reggae band hailing from Hawaii, has captivated audiences worldwide with their unique fusion of island reggae, country soul, and contemporary pop. Formed in 2007 and led by frontman Glenn Awong, Maoli has become a significant force in the Polynesian music scene, blending traditional Hawaiian sounds with modern influences to create a distinctive musical style. Glenn Awong, the lead singer and founder of Maoli, began his musical journey at the age of 14 in Maui. Encouraged by a high school teacher, he started writing original music during his sophomore year and recorded demos of his songs. By his senior year, Glenn was ready to share his music with a broader audience.
In 2005, he and his band won a Battle of the Bands competition on Maui, marking the beginning of Maoli's rise in the Hawaiian music scene. Maoli's music is characterized by a seamless blend of country, R&B, soul, acoustic, rock & roll, and reggae, a style often referred to as "Country Reggae." This fusion has resonated with a diverse audience, enabling the band to sell out large venues in Hawaii and perform across the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, Guam, and the Saipan Territories. Their heartfelt and uplifting music has earned them an impressive collection of 21 #1 Regional Island Reggae Hits. Over the years, Maoli has achieved significant milestones. In 2020, they won Group of the Year and Album of the Year for their record "Sense of Purpose" at iHeart’s Island Awards.
The following year, they received Album of the Year and Song of the Year accolades. In 2023, the band embarked on their Maoli Music Overload (MMO) tour, selling more than 45,000 tickets across four cities in Hawaii and 11,500 tickets on the MMO US tour, including appearances at festivals like Cali Roots and Holo Holo Fest Sacramento. Currently, Maoli continues to evolve their sound and reach new audiences. They have been working with hit producers Dann and David Huff to further bridge the gap between island soul and country tradition. Their latest album, "Last Sip of Summer," showcases this innovative approach.
Additionally, Maoli remains committed to their roots, using their platform to raise awareness about social and environmental issues affecting their island home, demonstrating a deep connection to their community and culture. Maoli's journey from a local band in Maui to an internationally recognized reggae powerhouse is a testament to their talent, versatility, and dedication to their craft. Their music continues to inspire and unite listeners, carrying the spirit of Hawaii to audiences around the globe.
