Formed in 2009 in Hermosa Beach, California, Fortunate Youth emerged as a collaboration of local reggae musicians aiming to spread peace, love, and unity through their music. The band's original lineup included Dan Kelly (vocals), Travis "Travi Bongo" Walpole (percussion), Jered Draskovich (keys/bass), Greg Gelb (bass/guitar), Corey Draskovich (guitar/bass/keys), and Ryan "Gonzo" Gonzales (guitar). Their diverse musical backgrounds and shared passion for reggae laid the foundation for a unique sound that blends elements of blues, ska, rock, soul, and punk. In 2010, Fortunate Youth released their debut EP, "Up-Lifted," which garnered positive attention and set the stage for their first full-length album, "Irie State of Mind," in 2011. This album debuted at #2 on the iTunes Reggae Charts and reached #13 on Billboard's Top 100 Reggae Albums Chart.
The success of "Irie State of Mind" propelled the band into extensive touring, including supporting acts like Tribal Seeds and The Green, and headlining their own nationwide tours. The album's success led to the "Don't Think Twice Spring Tour" with supporting acts Hirie and Sensamotion Band. The title track became a favorite, even being added to the Seattle Mariners' on-field walk-up playlist.
