Judge Roughneck is a prominent ska and reggae band hailing from Denver, Colorado. Formed in 1995, the group has been a staple in the local music scene, captivating audiences with their dynamic performances and unique sound. Their music pays homage to the early '80s British 2-Tone movement and the original jazz-infused ska of Jamaica, creating a fusion that resonates with fans of both traditional and contemporary reggae. Over the years, Judge Roughneck has shared the stage with numerous legendary acts, including UB40, Burning Spear, Rebelution, General Public, The Skatalites, The Specials, The English Beat, Fishbone, Damian Marley, Steel Pulse, and The Wailers. Their impressive resume also boasts 20 appearances at the prestigious Reggae on the Rocks Festival held at Colorado's iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater.
In 2015, after a 14-year hiatus from recording, Judge Roughneck released their fourth full-length album, 'Pick You Up.' Co-produced by lead singer Byron Shaw and trombonist David Dinsmore, the album was recorded and mixed in Dinsmore's studio. Shaw penned the majority of the tracks, with contributions from Dinsmore and bassist Brian Handlos. The album features a notable cover of The English Beat's 'Mirror in the Bathroom,' which includes vocals by Angelo Moore, the lead singer and founding member of Fishbone. The accompanying music video was filmed at Denver's Goosetown Tavern, a favorite local spot for the band. The current lineup of Judge Roughneck includes Byron Shaw on lead vocals, bongos, and melodica; David Dinsmore on trombone and backing vocals; Jon Hegel on saxophone, keyboard, and backing vocals; Brian Handlos on bass; Chris Reidy on guitar; and Khalil Brown on drums.
Additional member Andre Mali contributes on trumpet. Their collective talent and dedication have solidified Judge Roughneck's reputation as Colorado's premier ska and reggae band. Judge Roughneck's discography comprises four full-length albums: 'Pick You Up,' 'True,' 'Skankin’ Naked,' and 'Rude One’s Money Making Scheme.' Each album showcases the band's commitment to blending traditional ska and reggae elements with their own unique style, resulting in a sound that is both nostalgic and fresh. As of 2025, Judge Roughneck continues to perform regularly across Colorado, bringing their energetic and soulful performances to fans old and new. Their enduring presence in the music scene is a testament to their passion for ska and reggae music and their ability to evolve while staying true to their roots.
