The Buddhahood

The Buddhahood is a dynamic eight-piece band hailing from Rochester, New York, known for their eclectic fusion of reggae, rock, funk, and world music influences. Formed in 1996, the group has been captivating audiences with their energetic performances and unique sound, which they aptly describe as "Worldternative." The band's inception was spearheaded by Tony Cavagnaro, a visionary musician whose passion for diverse musical styles laid the foundation for The Buddhahood's distinctive sound. Under his leadership, the group quickly gained a reputation for their vibrant live shows, characterized by a seamless blend of various genres and an infectious energy that blurred the lines between the stage and the dance floor. Tragically, in September 2007, Cavagnaro's life was cut short in a car accident. This loss was a significant blow to the band and the Rochester music community.

In honor of his memory and contributions, The Buddhahood established the annual January Thaw Concert, celebrating Cavagnaro's life and music. Proceeds from this event support the Tony Cavagnaro Young Musician's Scholarship Fund, benefiting the Hochstein School of Music and Dance. Despite the profound loss, The Buddhahood persevered, continuing to evolve and expand their musical horizons. They have released several albums showcasing their versatility and commitment to creating uplifting, original music. Their discography includes titles like "Muddy Roots" (2006), "Toasty: Live at Park Ave Fest 2007" (2007), "Root" (2013), and "The SPACE" (2017).

Each album reflects the band's dedication to blending various musical traditions into a cohesive and engaging sound. The Buddhahood's lineup has seen changes over the years, with each member bringing their unique talents and influences to the group. The current ensemble features Nate Coffey on guitar and vocals, Rick Whitney on bass and vocals, Lou Spezio on keyboards and vocals, Luke Perry on trombone, Kris Kimmel on percussion, Courtney Balles on alto saxophone, flute, and vocals, Gabriel Costanzo on trumpet, and Pete Mugnolo on drums and vocals. This diverse assembly of musicians contributes to the band's rich and layered sound. Known for their percussive prowess, The Buddhahood often incorporates a variety of instruments, including steel drums and an array of percussion, creating a rhythmic foundation that invites audiences to dance and immerse themselves in the music.

Their performances are not just concerts but communal experiences that foster a sense of unity and joy among attendees. The Buddhahood's influence extends beyond their recordings and live shows.
